omg i TOTALLY sympathize with you. one of my worst pet peeves in the world is the sound of people chewing with their mouth open, and gum is the WORST b/c it doesn't ever END. ENOUGH OF THE SMACKING! I am in the exact same situation, btw. even with headphones on it doesn't drown it out.
